Our Mission

SIDS and Kids SA is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during infancy and childhood and to supporting bereaved families. We deliver on our vision through evidence based education and bereavement support. Our evidence based information is aimed at reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and fatal sleeping accidents

Our Target Audience

Our evidence-based education is developed for health professionals, childcare educators, new and expectant parents and grandparents and anyone who is involved in the care of babies and infants, such as foster carers and nannies.

Our Education Aims

  • To provide information to new and expectant parents, to allow them to make informed decisions about the infant care practices they choose to use with their baby.

  • To provide information to healthcare and childcare professionals so they can give parents and caregivers accurate information about current safe sleeping recommendations.

  • To provide information to healthcare and childcare professionals to enable them to effectively promote and model to parents and caregivers safe infant sleeping practices.

Our Results

Since the inception of safe infant sleeping information in the early 1990s, the incidence of Sudden Unexpected Deaths in Infancy (SUDI) has reduced by 80%, saving thousands of babies’ lives. Vigilance is still required to maintain this reduction in the number of babies dying suddenly and unexpectedly.

How to access safe infant sleeping resources

In late 2016 some of the SIDS and Kids offices around Australia were rebranded to Rednose. Currently SIDS and Kids SA is still operating independently, but our safe sleep message is still the same. The Rednose website (www.rednose.com.au) contains lots of information on safe infant sleeping for new and expectant parents, childcare professionals and healthcare professionals.

Safe sleeping information in the form of commonly asked questions and information statements can be accessed by selecting education from the Rednose website homepage.

Safe Sleeping brochures and posters can be ordered from the Rednose website by selecting shop from the website homepage.

Brochures available include:

Educational presentations for Healthcare Professionals

SIDS and Kids SA has a small and dedicated team. As such we are reliant on healthcare professionals and midwives to help spread our Safe Sleeping message to the broader community.

We work with government departments such as CaFHS (Child and Family Health Service), DECD (Department for Education and Child Development) and midwives and neonatal nurses from both the public and private sector.

Midwives

In South Australia the Safe Infant Sleeping Standards are best practice indicators for all persons working/volunteering with parents and/or caregivers with infants under 12 months of age.

These Standards require staff to be able to effectively promote and model safe infant sleep practices and environments. The standards apply to staff in all facilities and settings and ensure that parents and caregivers receive consistent and accurate information and the opportunity to observe recommended safe sleeping practices.

The South Australian Safe Infant Sleeping Standards closely mirror the SIDS and Kids SA recommendations for safe infant sleeping.

SIDS and Kids SA offer the following educational opportunities to midwives.
